You may find the answer with a LiveCD such as Knoppix. IBM used to have good compatibility with Linux, my T41 works very well.

No experience with Toshiba. Suggest you to bring a Knoppix Live CD with you for testing.

No matter IBM or Toshiba, you should pay attention to the support on hardware such as wireless LAN, built-in modem, ethernet network card, display resolution, mouse, USB and PCMCIA ports etc.

我的thinkpad x21工作很好,fedora 3, kernel 2.6.10. x20肯定没问题了
就是apm和acpi有些小问题，但不碍事.哈哈
