Howto use swap after livecd started?

Sorry for my ugly English.

I am on Sabayon livecd now. I want to use SWAP. I made a swap partition on /dev/sda8 and have typed "swapon /dev/sda8", but nothing happened. Still there is 100% usage of RAM, which showed "70% in use as cache".

Any suggestion?

I just wonder whether it will slow the computer. It turns out it won't do.

Another Question:
I know 2G RAM is enough for me in everyday use, then is it necessary to leave 2G or more on the harddisk for swap? I just want to have the "Hibernate?"(Xiu Mian) feather on my pc. Is it possible to hibernate when some software under compiling? Will the compiling be continued next time I boot the computer?

To zhllg:

I don't know how to get the output in text format. I know 30% in use by programs and 70% (or less) in use as cache just from the applet in the taskbar.

给swap分4G吧，这样比较保险。如果你要用休眠的功能的话。至少要和memory大小一样。
你在terminal上，执行free，就有输出结果了。

i have tried this:
at office, i mount a partition on an external harddisk as /var/tmp/portage, then emerge openoffice. then hibernate. unplug the external harddisk. then go home. after arrived at home, i  plug in the harddisk. resume, the compiling resumes just as it has never been stopped.

什么机器上 swap 能写到4G?  就算真写到4g了 那机器的速度估计是非人类能忍受的范围.
服务器?! swap大量长时间使用的服务器 该停机维护了......
